Le maître des plantes” - that’s what the media started calling my father after his initial success.
In our family there has always been a long history of guérisseurs, an almost noble title for us, although some people - even now - think of a «healer» as some kind of witch doctor. My father has never felt like a guérisseur in the negative sense and is considered one of the greatest healers of his time. Mistakenly, the study of herbs is thought to be a recent trend whereas it actually has very ancient origins: even Hippocrates and the School of Cos were interested in it.
However, whilst in the East, Africa and the Americas entire generations have continued to pass this tradition down to each other, in Europe it has been almost totally abandoned. My father deserves the credit for having brought it back into vogue in France and Italy. He has always had a gift for managing to sense things that others would only discover years later and all his books - books that were published forty or fifty years ago - talk passionately about herbs and nature, challenging the use of pesticides, fungicides, DDT and HIC for example. This is particularly surprising if we consider that, at that time, public concern regarding the alteration of foods was not the order of the day as it is now. Furthermore, even at that time, my father planned and practiced organic farming. Inspired by these ideas, the first Laboratoires des Herbes Sauvages opened in Fleurance in 1958. It was the first real European centre for the production and sale of herbs from controlled, organic and protected farming. His books have since been published in numerous countries around the world and have been read by 4 million people. As well as many normal people, his patients have included numerous famous figures and crowned heads like King Farouk, Édouard Herriot, Winston Churchill, Robert Schuman, Konrad Adenauer, Maurice Utrillo and Jean Cocteau. Now over 80 years old, he is still a determined and tenacious man who has succeeded in life and who, starting with nothing, has managed to make his dreams come true. Although he stopped practicing his profession years ago, my father continues to see people who ask for his opinion free of charge. His constant research and study and his tenacity in pursuing his ideals have made the name Mességué a global benchmark for everything relating to the natural world. This is the great heritage my father has left me, the best gift he could ever have given me: his name, the same name his sons and my sons also have, a name that Maurice Mességué has honoured in his professional experience and that we aim to honour by trying to improve the quality of life.
